"The Red Schoolhouse", by Winslow Homer, final

I finally made it back to the National Gallery after almost a year! I'm not really happy with this copy. I couldn't get the color or the value of the dress right. This was the reason I chose to copy this painting - I thought it was a simple composition with a very challenging problem. The dress is in shadow, but doesn't seem dark. At first, my copy's dress was much too light. I darkened it today, and put more color into the sky, but the color of my dress is wrong, and it seems too dark. Oh well, I don't want to work on this one anymore. I'm going to try to do a still life next time, if I can get approval for it. Watch this space - I'm going to aim for every other Thursday.
